Clerkenwell Design Week 2023NewsNEWS CDW 2023 ![]() The life of the office isn’t static, colleagues undertake each day different tasks in different ways depending on their own individual needs. This constant state of flux has driven a need for diverse and adaptable workplace furniture; from collaborative meetings, individually focused work, touch down areas, breakout spaces and more.
However, offices also evolve over longer time scales too. In recent years we’ve seen a rapid transformation in how workspaces are used, driving a need to update or change their interiors, including the furniture, to cater for new ways of working and changes in technology.
With ever increasing urgency we also need to look at the impact we have on the environment, understanding how to re-use, re-envision and re-vitalise older office areas utilising existing furniture. Rather than all new, designers can consider adding-to or changing what’s already there to rejuvenate spaces.
This Clerkenwell Design Week Davison Highley is investigating both micro and macro office changes. Discover upholstered furniture whose modular nature caters for every area of the workspace, get up close with our quality construction and let us share with you our sustainable practices.

Environmental Score
News
NEWS December 2022

We’re on a mission. And have been for years! To have sustainability at the core of our organisation. It’s been underpinning our business model for many years with common sense strategies including; sourcing local raw materials, ensuring ethical practises and reducing waste.
Quite rightly, the sustainability topic has become central to many conversations, both personally and professionally, which is why we want to help untangle the narrative and bring clarity by highlighting some of our more recent initiatives.
Environmental Scorecards
We’re making available environmental data on our most popular collections; Bee, Bee fluted, EL and Boulevard.
Download our Environmental Scorecard to access accurate, informative and verifiable data on the environmental profile of key products. For modular collections we’ve analysed by individual element allowing clients to easily identify a total value of, for example, Embodied Carbon or Recycled Content, for any specific design.
The scorecards have been produced in accordance with the internationally recognised ISO 14021:2016 standard and have been independently verified by our consultant Dragonfly Sustainability.
Download them here for:
BEE, BEE-FLUTED, EL, and BOULEVARD
FSC® certification renewal
Each year we are audited for compliance and we’re delighted to pass again in November 2022 with an exemplary report.
Our environmental certification which includes FSC®, FIRA membership and FISP reassures our clients that as an organisation we are following best practise, answerable to global organisations, in terms of our environmental procedures. It also gives us reassurance that any new initiatives we introduce are included in the monitoring from an accreditation perspective.
Introducing the RE- scheme
Extend the life of your existing Davison Highley furniture with our RE- scheme, where we encourage our clients to reuse their existing Davison Highley furniture.
Part of our Sustainable Manufacture Program, clients have the option to reduce the volume of waste by renewing their existing Davison Highley furniture. All our furniture comes with a 10-year frame and 7-year foam guarantee, but what happens if the fabric starts to look tired, the layout needs to be modified or styles have changed? Rather than replace, we encourage our clients to instead talk to us about using our RE- scheme to refresh, repair or repurpose existing Davison Highley furniture. Each project is individually assessed to determine what needs to be done in order to increase the longevity of the furniture.
Reliable expertise
Since 2017 we’ve been working with the team at Dragonfly Sustainability, an external consultancy, to help us realise our sustainability goals.
Their reliable expertise has not only assisted our certification processes but also given us confidence in our data, with the knowledge that it has been independently verified.
Kind Regards

The Dimensions of the Workplace
News
NEWS July 2022

Excerpt from The Sustainable Workplace of the Future presented during Clerkenwell Design Week with independent sustainability expert James Bell, Dragonfly Sustainability.
As part of our activities during Clerkenwell Design Week we were delighted to be joined by James Bell, Dragonfly Sustainability. We’ve been working with James for several years now, he has been instrumental in the certification of our long established sustainability credentials. His unique insight, gained from experience working with leading FMCG organisations, is fascinating and we were delighted he could join us for an introduction which will be followed up with a second talk during Clerkenwell Open in September.
The four dimensions of workplace design
Exploring four different dimensions of workplace design; emotional, physical, technological and purposeful, can together drive behavioural, organisational and technological change to create a more sustainable, equal, healthy and prosperous workplace. We’ve summarised the key points of each below but the talk can be watched in its entirety on our Instagram channel @davison_highley
Emotional workplace.
Employees are increasingly looking for an emotional connection with employers who share their views on wellbeing and corporate governance. Attitudes towards environmental, social and governance, across all age categories, are conclusive according to recent research conducted by PwC.
1) Unily(2019), Future of the Workplace 2030+
2) PwC (2021), Consumer Intelligence Series 2021
Physical workplace.
There is no question, and much has been written about the fact, that the workplace has had a dramatic shock over recent years. Data from the EY Work Reimagined study show that while workplace remains the “anchor” for personal and career wellbeing, the days of fixed desks have arguably gone with many organisations look at more zoned campus style workplaces. Collaboration has become key and has been identified during the pandemic as one of the key reasons people need to be in the workplace. This new space planning strategy often creates an entrepreneurial spirit where employees have the freedom for creativity and radical thinking.
1) Unily(2019), Future of the Workplace 2030+
2) EY (2021), Work Reimagined: The sustainable and inclusive workplace of the future
Technological workplace.
The abundant use of Zoom and Teams has unquestionably been revolutionary in the transformation of workplaces but this aspect of the technological workplace is only a small part of the story with technology also applying to the buildings which have become more human centric through the use of lighting, ventilation and temperature to optimise comfort and well being.
Unily(2019), Future of the Workplace 2030+
Purposeful workplace.
Relevant to all who have been rethinking their purpose following the pandemic and key to attracting the best talent, the purposeful workplace considers a less hierarchical structure in organisation which can be encouraged through workplace design where modular and flexible zones can be re-worked and restructured keeping office spaces nimble and adaptive.

Fabric trends/ SS22
News
NEWS March 2022

Our love of fabrics is no secret and like a child in a sweet shop we always get excited to hear about the latest innovations and trends from our network of fabric creators. Take a closer look at what’s new for SS22.
NEW from CAMIRA
Introducing Sumi: Understated in its elegance and refined in its colouration, Sumi is a fabric which exudes serenity and style. Woven from worsted wool using fine marl yarns, this natural textile embraces a purity of composition and an impeccably simple aesthetic which makes it both without age, yet achingly current.
NEW from ULTRAFABRICS
Introducing UF Select: Developed to inspire with an array of timeless textures and tones influenced by traditional handicraft. Crafted exclusively with hand-picked and trusted mill partners UF Select showcases the innovative performance and comfort of Ultrafabrics with two new creative collections, Lino and Montage.
Lino creates the look of a textile weave with its two-toned crosshatch design, soft touch, and sizeable assortment of on-trend colours. Montage has a softly weathered texture that’s rich, organic, and brought to life through an impactful range of timely neutrals and natural shades. Uniting state-of-the-art technology and sustainably-focused innovation, these are intelligent fabrics designed to do more.
NEW from VESCOM
Introducing eco-friendly upholstery fabrics: Made from post-consumer PET bottles, our 100% recycled polyester FR yarn turns the problem of plastic waste into a solution. Bottles are collected locally before being separated by type and colour, processed and converted into flakes. Four structures, one family: Designed to work in unison, the four qualities that make up our recycled upholstery family – Wilson, a basic weave; Avon, a melange; Norfolk, a grid; and Harding, a twill – honour fundamental weaving techniques. This purity and simplicity, as well as the non-directionality of most structures, makes them incredibly easy to combine with one another – and to integrate into interiors.
NEW from MUIRHEAD
Introducing Muirhead: For low carbon, high luxury leather, it’s strength is in the creation of the lowest carbon leather in the world at only 1.1kg CO2e per hide. It’s a beautiful, natural and sustainable material, trusted by brands like Mulberry, British Airways, Rolls Royce, and Princess Yachts, we well as, of course, Davison Highley.
NEW from SVENSSON
Introducing Macro: Inspired by the prism, Svensson have been exploring how fabrics can help us to distil light, how structures can bring shadows to life when the light hits them and how colour scales can live in synergy with light. With sound environmental credentials, Macro upholstery fabric is made using wool from local Scandinavian sheep. The wool-dyeing process brings to life a pattern which, when observed from a distance, blends together to create a more even surface, hence the name Macro.
NEW from YARWOOD LEATHER
Introducing three new ranges: Chosen to complement the leather look in designs, Yarwood Leather have introduced three new contract fabric ranges. Chamonix – a warm and comforting wool fabric in classic and commercial tones. Manhattan – a luxurious and glamorous velvet feel in sophisticated neutrals and deep, rich colours. Santorini – a fresh and calming linen look with timeless tones and modern brights.
Our close relationship with quality suppliers not only helps us keep pace with the latest trends but also efficiently manage the production process. Fabric is ordered immediately when an order is received, allowing us to keep clients informed of any potential delays, even proposing alternatives if there is likely to be any delivery delay. On arrival at our workshop, our experienced team inspect by hand to avoid any rare flaws and use their skill and experience to thrill both us and our clients with their pattern matching prowess.

The Davison Highley Difference
News
NEWS February 2022

What is it that makes Davison Highley different? We can talk about the facts; we've been in business for over 40 years, our accreditations are exemplary, we're British Made. But what does that mean for you? Read more and discover the Davison Highley difference.
Personal service without the price
We like to cut all our timber boards and fabric by hand. Whilst this can take a little longer it does allow us to offer a personal Tailored service to clients who like to make minor adjustments to dimensions without the need for us to reprogramme machinery.
Cutting the fabric by hand also allows us to factor in any nuances in the fabric, appreciating how the fabric stretches and behaves, in order to achieve the perfect finish.
Transparent sustainability credentials
It's in our heritage. Many years ago our business was modelled on local supply; it's quick, responsive and reliable. From our home in the Chiltern Hills, we've increased monitoring of every step of the production process to measure the environmental impact of everything we make. It helps us achieve sustainability goals for ourselves and our clients.
Holistic fabric management
We don't like surprises! Which is why we order fabric as soon as an order is received, allowing us to keep clients informed of any potential delays. Our close relationships with fabric suppliers allows us to suggest alternatives if there is likely to be any delivery delay due to our supply partners.
On arrival at our workshop, our team inspect by hand to avoid any rare flaws and use their skill and experience to thrill both us and our clients with their pattern matching prowess.
Responsive communication
Face to face, TEAMS, Zoom, WhatsApp. We don't mind how, we simply like to keep clients up to date with honest, timely and transparent communication.

As many of our clients know, we love our home in the heart of Clerkenwell. For 8 years we’ve been welcoming clients to our extensive showroom in Brewhouse Yard. A late 19th Century brewery building whose architecture gives a gentle nod to its historic past, with distinctive pillars and arched windows and on sunny days our outdoor courtyard provides a welcome retreat for a relaxing break, a moment to pause on a busy day.
Enlisting the immense interior design skills of Natasha Cruder, we’ve had a redesign, a time to look at the space we have and clearly focus on providing flexibility whilst optimising the customer experience.
Flexible workplace
Workplaces change. We hear this from our clients and our showroom is no exception. Sheers have been strategically hung in the space as a flexible, separation tool, to encourage the flow but also to create ‘pause’ moments. By using sheers and not heavy curtains we retain the sight lines across the space but recognise those moments to pause.
In times, of new product launches, inspirational talks and even yoga sessions, we’ll be able to adapt the space to suit the occasion.
Customer experience
Our approach was to construct a journey through the space that enabled the visitor to create personalised experiences with the products they were seeing and the space itself, whilst retaining the views across the open plan showroom – we did not want to hide the buildings features, in particular the columns and arched ceilings.
The application of plants was used to focus the eye line. Upon entry your eye is drawn to the trailing column plants, to create a light barrier between the front part of the showroom and the back. The portable potted plants have been used to direct the visitor through the space but also to create a realistic environment to showcase the furniture pieces inspired by biophilic design.
The Working Area and Teapoint are nestled in the far corner near the WCs. With walls painted a rich deep green we’ve created a warm, relaxed environment that invites collaboration and socialising. The space offers a large high table with AV and a fabric library making it ideal for meetings and presentations. The informal breakout seating in the Teapoint area act as a great way to connect the two spaces.
The first of our phased developments for the showroom is now complete!
Let us show you around! Book your appointment by emailing magic@davisonhighley.co.uk or take an online tour now.

Considered showroom design
Working with interior designer, Natasha Cruder, the Davison Highley showroom is undergoing a redesign with a focus on user navigation to encourage flow and create inviting spaces to pause; enriching the visitor experience. We’ll be introducing smart elements, such as trailing column plants, luxurious sheer fabrics, and dynamic graphic treatments, allowing flexibility for future use, whilst remaining respectful of the architectural arched ceilings and columns of the late 19th century brewery building.
Space for collaboration with BEE-fluted
Built upon the extremely popular BEE modular range, BEE-fluted takes the design to the next level with its soft fluting creating a visually dynamic look. The range of undulating straight sections and gentle curves can be tailored to meet specific requirements, creating an inviting space where employees can collaborate or relax. Compatible with the BEE modular range, designers can create a cohesive design aesthetic for the entire workplace.
Space for concentration with the Skylon work chair
Based upon the popular Skylon range, Skylon work chair combines the comfort of the Skylon sofa range with the semi-private work space of our Skylon work booth. Featuring a robust tablet table, the Skylon work chair can also be fitted with a variety of power modules to create an independent work space for both short and long term working.
On hand throughout the event will be the team who have developed and launched this year the Davison Highley Sustainable Manufacturing Philosophy. Outlining how workplace furniture can be incorporated and support sustainability goals for clients, the team are available to discuss the real details, supported by data, of how Davison Highley have sustainability at the core of their business strategy.

Understanding sustainability standards
News
NEWS Understanding sustainability standards 2020

On Thursday 15th October weheld our inaugural webinar where we be explored the topic of sustainability accreditations, in the context of workplace furniture, and how to navigate them with industry expert James Bell, Dragonfly Sustainability. James has been working with Davison Highley for many years helping us realise our own sustainability goals in terms of manufacturing procedures and opportunities.
"Both across the furniture supply chain and broader commercial interiors sector, sustainability certification has become an increasingly established feature in demonstrating and promoting environmental and social benefits. Although, at the same time, this has led to a proliferation of schemes, creating confusion and complexity with regard to the specific sustainability objectives targeted by these standards. In this webinar we will examine and demystify these certification schemes, whilst offering practical guidance to enable you to make empowered decisions on your sustainability requirements.” James Bell, Dragonfly Sustainability.

Adapting and managing change.

NEWS Adapting and managing change 2020

It’s been a unique 6 months, a transformation on so many levels for all of us. One of our Account Managers, Caroline Atack has taken some time to consider what those changes have meant to both her and Davison Highley, whilst reflecting on industry demands and trends.
“At the end of the day the one thing I am really missing is human contact and it’s a real treat to have scheduled appointments now at our Clerkenwell showroom. Bouncing ideas off each other, interaction. I think where people can work at home they probably still will and then just come to the office when they need to work together as a team, in a focussed and mindful way. Meanwhile we remain open minded to stay connected wherever we can.”

Sustainability Matters

NEWS Sustainability Matters 2020

Whilst concerns for hygiene and the re-working of the workplace remains top of the agenda for many businesses, we are also seeing clients adopting a more mindful approach to purchasing where consideration is rightly given to sustainability credentials.
It's a topic which has been central to Davison Highley since our family business was created. Our circular approach effects every step we take from utilising a local supply chain, developing products to maximise resources and add value, through to the re-use of ex-showroom furniture and production off cuts within local community projects.
Whilst we're extremely proud of our accreditations, in essence they are a natural consequence of the practises we have in place across the business. Those processes and our integrity is putting us in a good place to weather the current challenges and continue to serve our clients with a timely, reliable and sustainable service.

NEWS Space Inspiration 2020

First and foremost, we send wishes of good health to all our clients, colleagues and friends.
As we all await advice in the coming week from the government on our collective return to the workplace, there is plenty of thought leadership into how the new workplace is going to shape up. One thing is for certain, it will look different for us all. From flexible work patterns, increased hygiene stations, removal of hot desking or even the addition of workpods we are sure to see the very best of creativity. We've curated some Space Inspiration for you below if you need to design in more social distancing.
With all raw materials coming from within a 50 mile radius of our High Wycombe workshop we can be nimble to respond as soon as we have the reassurances it is safe to do so for our employees.
Meanwhile, stay safe at home.
The red sofa.
We've probably all been seeing more of this sofa over recent weeks! Although most of our projects are for workplace, we do also work with production companies on some of the major TV shows. We're particularly proud of the iconic red sofa which we manufactured earlier this year before lockdown. It's based upon the Buzz Collection with some customisation as developed with the client.
Space inspiration.
Need to encourage some social distancing? Get inspired with this selection of seating; reception area seating from Cristiana, private booth seating with Skylon, flexible stools for extra perch spots with Bertie or banquette seating with the three seater Boulevard available at a convenient 1800mm width or even incorporate arm breaks for intuitive spacing.

Coronavirus statement
News
NEWS CVStatment 2020

As a family run business nothing is more important to us at Davison Highley than the people we work with, whether staff, clients or suppliers, our first thought is always for the health and wellbeing of every individual. During this period we are actively working to limit how the Covid-19 virus is impacting both the business and our people.
This week we have followed the instructions of our Prime Minister and asked our team to stay home and stay safe. Pausing production and temporarily closing our Clerkenwell showroom were difficult decisions but we will resume as soon as possible in line with government advice. Our Sales, Admin and Design teams are all working from home; processing orders- ready to move into production as soon as it recommences, working with our suppliers to ensure that our orders will be ready as soon as we need them and everyone is on hand to help as normal, so keep in touch with your usual contact.
Our financial standing has never been stronger and as a wholly owned family business we pride ourselves on straight talking, being fair and will be working hard with our supply chain to meet our client needs. Our business planning in recent weeks has served us well and we have good stock levels; our timber stores are at an all-time high, likewise our parts and fittings.
We want to reassure our clients that any order you have placed or are planning on placing will be fulfilled to the best of our ability. Manufacturing production is primed and ready so we can return to normality as soon as this isolation period is over, any orders placed whilst we are waiting to restart production will be processed up to manufacture stage and will result in shortened lead times. We will of course continue to update you as the situation evolves.
Our social media is being regularly updated and we’re going to be putting additional work into our Pinterest page; please take a look if you’re working on a new project or let us know if you need help to develop an existing project, we’re here to help.
We recognise this is a difficult time for us all professionally and personally and we would like to take this opportunity to offer our support in any way we can. Our sales team are working from home and always available to answer questions, discuss products and help with projects.
